Olaniwun Ajayi LP (OALP or the Firm) advised the Lagos State Government (LASG) on its partnership with the E1 Team to host the E1 Electric Boat Racing Championship in Lagos from 3 to 5 October 2025. The event marked the Championship’s first outing anywhere on the African continent.
What the E1 electric boat racing Championship brings to Lagos
The E1 series races all-electric powerboats. It pairs competitive sport with a clear clean-energy message. In that sense, it sits at the meeting point of innovation, marine mobility and environmental responsibility.
The Lagos round put world-class crews on the city’s waterways. Beyond the spectacle, the event was designed to prompt real conversations on sustainability. It also showcased Africa’s growing place in sustainable sport, tourism and the blue economy. As a result, it opened new economic opportunities for communities around the lagoon.
In addition, the event strengthened Lagos as a host city for international competition. It drew broadcasters, sponsors and visitors to the waterfront over three days. Therefore the commercial questions ran well beyond the races themselves.
OALP’s role on a first-of-its-kind event
OALP acted as legal adviser to LASG on the hosting arrangements. The mandate covered a structure with no domestic precedent. Consequently, the Firm worked through the commercial, regulatory and event-delivery questions that the partnership raised. This kind of instruction reinforces the Firm’s position as a go-to adviser for groundbreaking, market-defining initiatives.
The Championship also fits Lagos State’s wider sustainability agenda. The State has already turned to the capital market to fund that agenda, as our note on the Lagos State green and conventional bond issuances explains. Moreover, Nigeria’s broader shift toward low-carbon growth appears in our analysis of the operationalisation of the Nigerian carbon market.
