The Nigerian maritime sector is of critical importance in the development of the Nigerian economy and there continues to be concerted efforts by the Nigerian Government and maritime stakeholders in ensuring that the sector attains its full potential. The year 2022 witnessed significant efforts by the Nigerian Government and stakeholders in improving maritime safety and security, maritime infrastructure, and empowering of indigenous shipowners towards increasing local tonnage. Despite the inimical effect of the Russia-Ukraine war and continuing impact of Covid-19 on the sector, significant milestones were achieved in the sector. Notable decisions were also given by our Courts that further deepened our jurisprudence with respect to claims that qualify as admiralty claims under Nigerian admiralty law. This edition of our annual Nigerian maritime industry report encapsulates these significant developments in the Nigerian maritime industry in 2022 with our outlook for the industry in 2023, which we hope will be an interesting read to maritime stakeholders in Nigeria and globally.
