We are excited to announce a data protection training for the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC). Working with the team from Macmillan Keck Attorneys and Solicitors, our Celestina Nwabueze and Patrick Omodia facilitated the two-day capacity-building session on 16–17 October 2024.
The training covered the fundamental concepts and principles of data protection. Topics included registration, fees, audits, notifications, assessments, complaints handling, investigations and enforcement. It also explored the responsibilities of data controllers and processors, particularly for cross-border data transfers and data breaches. In addition, it looked at the Commission’s role in fostering transparency, security and trust when breaches occur.
The training stood out for its practical focus. We explored international good practices, relevant case law, administrative decisions and case studies to deepen participants’ understanding. The sessions also included interactive elements to assess learning and engagement. As a result, the Commission’s staff left with practical insights and tools for their roles.
We contributed significantly to the drafting of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023. It is our pleasure to keep advancing policy and institutional development in this area. We extend our sincere appreciation to the ID4D of the World Bank (ID4D) and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission for putting together this impactful event.
