The Securities and Exchange Commission has directed all Capital Market Operators to renew their registration for 2026. It issued the statement on 12 December 2025.
The renewal window opens on 1 January 2026 and closes on 31 January 2026.
Why capital market operators registration renewal exists
The SEC reintroduced annual renewal in 2021. It had three aims.
- Keep an up-to-date database of registered operators in Nigeria.
- Strengthen investor confidence in the market.
- Sharpen the Commission’s oversight of capital market activity.
What you need to submit
The requirements are short. An operator must file two things.
- The 2026 annual subscription receipt from the relevant trade group or groups.
- Every other document that the registration renewal portal requires.
Operators should therefore gather trade group receipts early. The window runs for one month only.
What happens if you miss the deadline
Non-compliance carries real consequences.
- Penalties: the Commission may impose monetary fines on an operator that ignores the directive.
- Inability to operate: the Commission may restrict or suspend an operator from capital market activities until it complies in full.
The wider regulatory picture
This directive sits within a broader tightening of capital market supervision. The Investment and Securities Act 2025 widened the Commission’s powers and raised penalties for market misconduct. Our note on the ISA 2025 and the SEC clampdown covers that shift in more detail.
