The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) recently announced the commencement of a bid process for the construction of a 4000MW nuclear power plant, as part its plans to bridge the energy gap in the country. Given the sensitive nature of nuclear projects and its novelty in these parts, we consider it helpful to highlight the regulatory, commercial, and infrastructural framework that will be relevant to the development of nuclear power projects in Nigeria
Whilst the FGN’s decision to facilitate the development of a nuclear power plant is defining, we note that the viability and sustainability of the project will be largely dependent on the creation of an enabling environment to support the project.
